A's notes: Cespedes gets the day off

HOUSTON, Tex. -- Yoenis Cespedes is out of the A's lineup for the series finale in Houston. Cespedes tweaked his elbow in the seventh inning of Saturday night's game, but was fine afterward. He even promised to hit a lot of home runs after the game.

"It's just a day off," A's manager Bob Melvin said. "He's fine."

One positive aspect to the A's outfield depth is that they can afford to rest their outfielders without dropping off too much offensively. Cespedes is 0 for 9 in this series with five strikeouts. A day off could benefit him.

"With the depth of the outfield, if he's not swinging as well as he normally does we'll just give him a day off and with a full day off [Monday] it will probably serve him well," Melvin said.

Cespedes is tied with Jed Lowrie and Coco Crisp for the team lead with two home runs. After Saturday's game, Cespedes said his mechanics are out of whack at the plate. He has identified the problem and should be able to fix it. As many noticed last year, he is a quick learner.

"The one thing about him is it's never for a lack of confidence," Melvin said. "He's not a guy that gets down and doubts himself, he just gets mad and sometimes frustrated."

-- Chris Young will get the start in center field. Seth Smith will start in left. Crisp gets a day as the designated hitter. He tweaked his back on Friday making a diving attempt and fouled a ball off his foot on Saturday night.

DL Watch:

-- Hiro Nakajima will be doing more baseball activity once the A's return home. Adam Rosales hasn't done any baseball activity yet, but is progressing. Melvin said they will have a better idea about both of the A's injured infielders when the team gets home.
