Noonan gets first start on frosty day at Wrigley

CHICAGO – The big news in Wrigley Field is actually happening in Daytona Beach, where Cubs top prospect Jorge Soler brandished a bat during a benches-clearing brawl.

Back here in Chicago, the only thing I’m brandishing is a muffler. It’s not balmy out there. A day ago, the Cubs postponed their game with the Brewers five hours before the first pitch. They knew it would be a miserably cold, wet night.

It’s still cold but mostly drizzling, with high temperatures expected to stay in the low 40s the next couple days. (The most critical piece of information: The tarp is on the field.) If the Giants and Cubs can get through this four-game series without having to sacrifice Monday’s scheduled off day, it’ll be a minor miracle.

But hey. We already had a snowstorm in Scottsdale this spring. So the Giants should be mentally prepared for this.

(And as one Twitter follower suggests, someone should tell Alfonso Soriano that it’s sunny and 80 degrees in San Francisco right now.)

Nick Noonan would be happy to play on snow skis. He’s making his major league debut as Marco Scutaro gets a routine day off. The team arrived around midnight local time, but Scutaro, Buster Posey and Pablo Sandoval all have received a day off over the past 72 hours. So the Giants should be relatively fresh.

It’s the first time Hunter Pence and Nate Schierholtz will play against each other since they were traded last year.

The Cubs just moved all their pitchers back a day after Wednesday’s postponement, which is meaningful for right-hander Scott Feldman. The Burlingame native and College of San Mateo alum gets to face his hometown team, instead.

Here are the updated probables for the rest of the series (all day games):

Friday: RHP Carlos Villanueva (0-0, 1.35) vs. RHP Matt Cain (0-1, 8.38) - CSN-BA

Saturday: RHP Jeff Samardzija (1-1, 2.63) vs. LHP Madison Bumgarner (2-0, 0, 1.32)

Sunday: RHP Edwin Jackson (0-2, 5.73) vs. RHP Tim Lincecum (1-0, 4.91)
