Shortstop Addison Russell, Oakland’s top minor league prospect, will miss at least a month with a torn right hamstring, A’s assistant general manager David Forst confirmed.
Russell originally strained his hamstring during spring training, when he was impressing team officials with his play in major league camp. He was assigned to Double-A Midland and re-injured his hamstring Friday against Arkansas, a game in which he homered and singled before exiting.
Russell told MiLB.com Friday that his current injury didn’t have the same feeling and wasn’t in the same location as his spring injury. But Russell has a Grade 3 strain, which is a complete tear of the muscle and can sometimes take multiple months to heal.
Russell, 20, is generally regarded as a top-15 prospect in all of the minors, with ESPN recently ranking him as high as the third-best overall prospect. A first-round pick (11th overall) in 2012, Russell is the most decorated prospect to come through the A’s farm system in several years.
