SEATTLE -– A’s catcher Geovany Soto left Friday’s game against the Mariners in the third inning with back spasms.
That led to Oakland losing its designated hitter, as Derek Norris moved from the DH spot to catcher and A’s starter Jason Hammel had to hit for himself. He made one plate appearance and dropped a bunt that went for a fielder’s choice/error and actually contributed to a scoring rally.
Manager Bob Melvin wound up pinch-hitting for Hammel in the sixth, and the right-hander finished his night going five innings and allowing two homers and three runs total.
Seattle led Oakland 4-2 in the seventh inning. An update on Soto’s condition will follow after the game …
