The A's optioned first baseman Nate Freiman to the minors to clear a roster spot for Drew Pomeranz, who will start Wednesday night against Houston.

Freiman was optioned to low Single-A Beloit, an unusual move that has reasoning behind it. Beloit will not make the playoffs, and when their season ends Monday, Freiman can rejoin the A's immediately without having to spend the full 10 days in the minors that is typically mandatory after a player is optioned.
Freiman, 27, is batting .241 with four home runs and 12 RBI in 22 games over two stints with the A’s.
