BALTIMORE -- The A's promoted lefty Brad Mills from Triple-A Nashville to make a spot start Friday night against the Orioles.
A back injury to ace Sonny Gray has necessitated the rotation shuffle. Gray was scratched Thursday, causing original Friday starter Jesse Chavez to be bumped up one day. The A's did not want to move up Saturday starter Chris Bassitt, opting to give the rookie an extra day of rest.
Where Gray will fit back into the rotation has yet to be announced. But if he slots in anywhere during this four-game series at Camden Yards, it will prevent a marquee matchup Tuesday between Gray and Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw, which would normally be Gray's day to pitch had he not been scratched.
Mills is 4-11 with a 4.45 ERA for Nashville, but he's enjoyed success against the Orioles, going 3-0 with a 1.65 ERA in three career starts. Mills served briefly in the A's rotation last season, going 1-1 with a 4.41 ERA in three starts.
Barry Zito might have been a consideration for Friday's start, but he is currently on Nashville's disabled list with a minor shoulder injury.
