OAKLAND – A’s second baseman Nick Punto is headed to the disabled list after suffering a strained right hamstring while running the bases in Saturday’s 8-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals.
Punto hurt his leg while slamming on the breaks rounding third on Jed Lowrie’s fifth-inning single. He limped back to the bag and was in obvious pain as trainers came out to visit him. He exited and Eric Sogard pinch-ran for him.
There was no immediate timetable given for Punto’s recovery.
Sogard and Alberto Callaspo, who both see lots of time at second base anyway, are the immediate options to cover for Punto’s absence. But a familiar face could be an outside option, as infielder Scott Sizemore was released Thursday by the New York Yankees. Sizemore was with the A’s from 2011-2013 but basically missed most of two seasons after twice tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.
