The A's placed Stephen Vogt on the family medical leave list Saturday and called up catcher Bruce Maxwell from Triple-A Nashville.
It's the first call-up for the 25-year-old Maxwell, a second-round draft pick in 2012. The left-handed hitter has enjoyed a breakout offensive season at Triple-A, hitting .321 with a career-high 10 home runs, 41 RBI and a .539 slugging percentage in 60 games for Nashville. Before this season, Maxwell hadn't hit more than seven homers or batted higher than .277 in any minor league season.
Vogt must remain on the medical leave list for a minimum of three days. To make room on the 40-man roster for Maxwell, reliever Fernando Rodriguez was placed on the 60-day disabled list as he recovers from a torn lat muscle on his right side.
