UPDATE (12:45 p.m. on Wednesday) -- The A's designated left-handed pitcher Andrew Werner for assignment to clear a space on the 40-man roster for Scott Kazmir.
Werner, 26, was 2-3 with a 5.58 ERA in eight starts for the Padres last year, his first season in the majors.

The A's officially announced the signing of left-hander Scott Kazmir to a two-year contract.
The deal, which had been completed Monday pending a physical, is reportedly worth $22 million.
As the A's roster currently stands, their starting rotation would include Kazmir, Jarrod Parker, Sonny Gray, Brett Anderson and either A.J. Griffin, Tommy Milone or Dan Straily for the fifth spot.
Write that in pencil, as Anderson is heavily involved in trade rumors.
The A's must clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Kazmir, and that move is expected to be announced later on Wednesday.
