SAN DIEGO – Stephen Vogt looked perfectly healthy at the plate Monday night, but looks can be deceiving.
The A’s catcher is banged up. He went 3-for-5 with a grand slam and five RBI in a 9-1 victory over the Padres, but a foul tip got him late in the game while he was behind the plate, adding to his physical ailments.
Manager Bob Melvin said after the game that Vogt is in need of a day off Tuesday.
“When I got hit on that play, all I know is that my jaw and the side of my head and shoulder are sore,” Vogt said. “I haven't watched it yet. When stuff like that happens, you don't know (where it hits you). It just ricocheted off a couple of places. I know I'm sore, but I'm fine.”
His big night with the bat provided some consolation. Vogt entered the game 3-for-38 in the month of June. But he singled twice, then stepped up in the eighth with the bases loaded and lined the first pitch from Cory Mazzoni over the right field wall for his second grand slam of the season. His five RBI tied a career high.
“I just had a feeling he was going to try to throw a heater first pitch,” Vogt said of his grand slam. “The guy throws hard so I decided, get your foot down and if you see it, hit it. He threw it and I didn't miss it.”
After a game where Vogt finally looked dialed in at the plate, Melvin would love to pencil him back in for Tuesday afternoon’s game. But Melvin knows what’s best for Vogt, a strong All-Star candidate who’s hitting .281 with a team-high 12 homers and 45 RBI.
“He’s banged up, really banged up,” Melvin said. “He’ll be off (Tuesday) unfortunately. He had a great game and started swinging the bat better, but we have to keep him healthy, and he’s got a myriad of things he’s dealing with right now. Like in three different places. He’s like a magnet. Recently here, it seems like he takes two or three shots a day.”
