Entering play Tuesday, Miami Marlins outfielder Ichiro Suzuki had 2,935 major league hits, tied for 33rd place on the all-time list with his hitting coach and former Giants slugger Barry Bonds.
In the top of the seventh inning against the Mets Tuesday, with a runner on second and two outs, Ichiro pinch-hit for pitcher Craig Breslow and reached on an infield single for his 2,936th hit, breaking the tie with Bonds.
It was his only at-bat of the game.
Ichiro now needs 64 hits to become the 30th member of the 3,000-hit club.
Up next: Frank Robinson at 2,943.
