BALTIMORE -– When Manny Machado’s appeal of his five-game suspension for the bat throwing incident was heard on Thursday, Dan Duquette forcefully argued for a reduction.
Duquette, the Orioles executive vice president of baseball operations, joined manager Buck Showalter and took questions for about 30 minutes from season ticket holders on Saturday.
The Orioles still have not heard if Machado’s suspension will be reduced. Duquette argued that Oakland pitcher Fernando Abad should have been more heavily disciplined because he allegedly threw at Machado on June 8. Abad was fined and Machado suspended.
“When a pitcher comes in from the bullpen and goes after the best defensive player who had an injury, and you dock that player five games and the other guy escapes, that’s a gross inequity,” Duquette said.
