The Texas Rangers claimed A's catcher Chris Gimenez off waivers Friday.
Gimenez, a Gilroy native, faced a tough road to win a 25-man roster spot with Oakland being that John Jaso, Derek Norris and Stephen Vogt were ahead of him on the depth chart.
Gimenez was out of minor league options, so he knew his time with the A's might be short. Oakland had claimed Gimenez off waivers from Tampa Bay in December. He hit .242 with no homers and three RBI in 25 games this spring.
The Rangers, aiming to unseat the A's as American League West champs, were searching for catching depth after losing starter Geovany Soto to a knee injury.
