OAKLAND -- Sonny Gray took the field for warm-ups Friday in uniform – just not the uniform he would have preferred.
The A’s right-hander, who attended Vanderbilt University, was wearing a University of Virginia jersey and hat during a good portion of his pregame routine. That was the price for losing a bet with Virginia alum and teammate Sean Doolittle. Virginia defeated Vanderbilt 2-1 in the best-of-three College World Series.
Had Doolittle lost, he would have been sporting Vanderbilt colors, not so proudly.
The reliever said he was both thrilled and relieved with the outcome. Vanderbilt, favored to win, took the first game before Virginia tied the series and then won the deciding game.
Doolittle got the Virginia gear directly from the Cavaliers’ equipment manager.
“If it makes any difference, our equipment guy shipped it after game 2. We were expecting to win,” Doolittle said with a smirk.
