The A's announced their 25-man roster for Tuesday's Wild Card game at Kansas City, with no major surprises among the group selected.
Oakland is carrying just eight pitchers to allow for a bigger cast of position players and give manager Bob Melvin maximum substitution options.
Starting pitchers Sonny Gray, Scott Kazmir and Jeff Samardzija were deactivated, along with relievers Jesse Chavez, Eric O'Flaherty and Evan Scribner. None of those three relievers has been used much lately, and O'Flaherty has battled some injury issues in recent weeks. Nine infielders made the roster, along with outfielder Billy Burns, a logical pinch-running option. Craig Gentry, another speedy outfielder, has yet to be cleared by MLB after suffering a concussion.
