OAKLAND — The A’s acquired veteran left-hander Ross Detwiler from the Cleveland Indians for cash Sunday and will assign him to Triple-A Nashville.
Detwiler, 30, is not joining the 40-man roster, but he adds experience and depth in the event the A’s do trade Rich Hill or others from their pitching staff in advance of the Aug. 1 non-waiver trade deadline.
The lefty opened the season in the Indians' bullpen and posted a 5.79 ERA in seven appearances before being sent to Triple-A, where he’s posted a 2-4 record and 4.60 ERA in 12 starts.
Detwiler was the sixth overall pick in the 2007 draft, taken by the Washington Nationals. He’s 17-34 with a 4.27 ERA in 76 career major league starts, and 4-3 with a 4.04 ERA in 104 relief appearances.
