OAKLAND -– The Oakland A’s selected eight players on Day 2 of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft, which featured rounds three through 10. The selections included catcher Sean Murphy (3rd round, Wright State), right-handed pitcher Skylar Szynski (4th, Penn HS), third baseman JaVon Shelby (5th, Kentucky), right-handed pitcher Brandon Bailey (6th, Gonzaga), center fielder Tyler Ramirez (7th, North Carolina), left-handed pitcher Will Gilbert (8th, North Carolina State), left-handed pitcher Dalton Sawyer (9th, Minnesota) and right-handed pitcher Mitchell Jordan (10th, Stetson).
Murphy hit .287 with six home runs, 34 RBI and 38 runs scored in 39 games with Wright State this year to earn Second Team All-Horizon League honors. He also walked 25 times for a .408 on-base percentage. Wright earned first team All-League honors in 2015 and was named to the All-Freshman Team in 2014.
Szynski is 10-1 with a 1.86 ERA for Penn HS and was named Northern Indiana Conference MVP. He has 80 strikeouts in 64.0 innings and has surrendered just one home run. Szynski is scheduled to pitch tomorrow against Zionsville in the Class 4-A Semistate. He is 27-4 with a 1.77 ERA in his high school career, which includes a no-hitter and a perfect game.
Shelby hit .212 with 12 home runs and 35 RBI in 54 games for Kentucky and finished third in the SEC in home runs. He was a First-Team All-SEC selection in 2015 and was named to 2014 All-SEC Freshman team in 2014. Shelby is the son of John Shelby, who played 1036 games in 11 seasons in the majors with Baltimore (1981-87), the Dodgers (1987-90) and Detroit (1990-91).
Bailey was a First-Team All-West Coast Conference selection after going 10-3 with a 2.42 ERA in 16 games, 15 starts, for the Zags. He struck out 125 batters in 100.1 innings and walked 31 while yielding four home runs. Bailey earned All-WCC honors as a freshman in 2014.
Ramirez hit .333 with eight home runs and 47 RBI in 54 games with North Carolina. He led the Tar Heels in home runs, walks (50), slugging percentage (.540) and on-base percentage (.482) and was a second team All-ACC selection.
Gilbert was 5-1 with six saves and a 2.22 ERA in 24 relief appearances with North Carolina State. He struck out 62 and walked 11 in 52.2 innings while surrendering just two home runs.
Sawyer was an All-Big Ten Second Team selection this year after going 7-7 with a 3.33 ERA and .227 opponents batting average in 16 starts. He struck out 112 batters in 94.2 innings and walked 42.
Jordan was 6-5 with a 3.94 ERA in 15 starts for Stetson. He struck out 75 and walked 32 in 80.0 innings. Jordan earned second team all-conference honors in 2015 after going 5-2 with a 3.28 ERA in 12 starts.
The A’s have drafted college players with 10 of their first 11 selections. The breakdown includes eight pitchers, one catcher, one infielder and one outfielder. The draft concludes tomorrow at 9:00 am with rounds 11 through 40.
