SANTA CLARA The 49ers have an open roster spot after cornerback Eric Wright left the team.
"I believe he's making a decision to not play football, as I understand it," 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh Said Tuesday at the opening of the team's mandatory minicamp. "I have not talked to him."
Wright is one of three 49ers who did not report to the opening of the mandatory minicamp. Tight end Vernon Davis and guard Alex Boone are both engaged in contract disputes.
Wright, a seven-year veteran, appeared in just seven games for the 49ers last season after signing as a free agent. He recorded an interception in the closing moments of the team's Week 14 victory over the Seattle Seahawks.
The 49ers initially acquired Wright in a trade with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but he did not pass the team physical. After finally getting cleared and signing as a free agent, Wright did not report for several weeks for personal reasons. He opened the season on the non-football illness list.
He was in line to make a contribution in the playoffs when Carlos Rogers sustained a hamstring injury. But the coaches had more confidence in Perrish Cox to play in the team's nickel defense. Cox was re-signed just days before the 49ers' playoff opener against the Green Bay Packers.
Wright was considered a long shot to make the team this season. Tramaine Brock, Chris Culliver, Cox, Chris Cook, Darryl Morris and draft picks Dontae Johnson and Kenneth Acker are the healthy cornerbacks on the 49ers' roster.
"We feel good about the guys we have," Harbaugh said. "We'll have an open spot and we'll do what's best for our team."
