Editor's Note: This is the final part in a series that spotlights three Washington-San Francisco matchups to watch Sunday, 1:25 p.m., at Levi’s Stadium.
Washington LT Trent Williams/Morgan Moses vs. 49ers OLB Aldon Smith
Tale of the tape
Williams (71): 6 foot 5, 337 pounds, fifth season, Oklahoma
Moses (76): 6 foot 6, 318 pounds, rookie, Virginia
Smith (99): 6 foot 4, 265 pounds, fourth season, Missouri
Williams was chosen to his second consecutive Pro Bowl last season after starting every game. But his streak is in jeopardy on Sunday against the 49ers. He was helped off the field last week against Tampa Bay with ankle and knee injuries. Moses took over for him.
The 49ers did not expect Smith to play as much as he did upon his return from an nine-game suspension for violations of the NFL’s policies on substance abuse and personal conduct. But when Ahmad Brooks found himself on the bench for the entire second half, Smith ended up playing 54 of the 49ers’ 70 defensive snaps against the New York Giants.
Regardless of which player lines at left tackle for Washington, Smith will have an opportunity to be a game-changing type of performer. He did not record any sacks in his season debut, but he did get pressure on Eli Manning to force some early throws. Smith spent the week studying bot players, but he will not change his game, he said.
“You pick up on their tendencies, things they do well, things they don’t do good,” Smith said. “But at the end of the day, I got to be on my game.”
