SANTA CLARA – Left tackle Joe Staley and defensive lineman Justin Smith returned to 49ers practice on Thursday.
Staley did not take part in most of Wednesday's practice due to a minor knee condition. Smith, a 14-year veteran, will likely be given a break from practices on Wednesdays throughout the season.
Tight end Vernon Davis (knee, ankle) and Vance McDonald (knee), right tackle Anthony Davis (hamstring) and cornerback Tramaine Brock (toe) were not suited up for practice.
