Ex-New York Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell decided Tuesday to join the Washington staff over an offer from the 49ers to coach the defensive backfield, a source confirmed to CSNBayArea.com.
Fewell, 52, interviewed late last week for the open position of defensive backs coach on Jim Tomsula’s first staff. Fewell reportedly interviewed with Washington on Monday. He will join Jay Gruden’s staff as defensive backs coach.
Fewell was the Giants defensive coordinator since 2010, during which time the team won a Super Bowl. But he was fired after this past season when the Giants finished 29th in total defense.
He last coached defensive backs in 2005 with the Chicago Bears. He has worked as a defensive coordinator every season since 2006, working four seasons with the Buffalo Bills and five with the Giants.
