SANTA CLARA – The 49ers re-signed veteran special-teams player Kassim Osgood on Monday to fill the roster vacancy created when the team waived running back LaMichael James, a source said.
Osgood was among the 49ers’ final cuts to reach the 53-player roster limit on Aug. 30. He was re-signed last week when the 49ers placed nose tackle Glenn Dorsey on injured reserve/designated for return.
The 49ers released Osgood again on Saturday to make room for guard Alex Boone on the 53-man roster.
Earlier on Monday, the 49ers granted James his release. Clubs have 24 hours to claim James off waivers to pick up the remainder of his $ 641,718 salary for this season. If James is not claimed, he will become a free agent.

The 49ers currently have just two running backs on their 53-man roster: Frank Gore and Carlos Hyde. First-year player Kendall Gaskins is on the practice squad.
Also, the 49ers waived fullback Will Tukuafu with an injury settlement. Tukuafu was placed on injured reserve on Aug. 30 with a concussion.
