A year ago, Greg Roman’s name surfaced in connection with a couple of NFL head-coaching vacancies. But he never got so much as an interview.
With six (and counting?) head-coaching vacancies around the league already, expect Roman to again be mentioned in speculation with some of these openings. With his experience coaching Colin Kaepernick and implementing elements of the read option in the 49ers' offense, he could be someone who attracts the attention of Washington with Robert Griffin at quarterback.

The 49ers ranked No. 24 in the NFL in total offense, which does not immediately make Roman a strong head-coaching candidate. But Roman has been on Jim Harbaugh’s staff since 2009, so that’s going to carry a lot of weight.
Also, Roman is eager for an opportunity to be a head coach -- college or pro. If he interviews with an NFL club, he will have to convince a team’s ownership and management that he’s a well-organized CEO type who can put together a strong plan and coaching staff.
Roman – or anyone else off the 49ers’ coaching staff – is not allowed to interview for any head-coaching job this week. As soon as the 49ers’ season is over, he can interview.
On Jan. 12, assistant coaches under contract to playoff teams that won their first-round playoff game can be interviewed for head-coaching jobs through the conclusion of the divisional playoff games.
On Jan. 26, an assistant coach participating in the Super Bowl, who previously interviewed for another club’s head-coaching job can have a second interview with the same team no later than the Sunday preceding the Super Bowl.
