SANTA CLARA -- The 49ers promoted an assistant to their head-coaching position, but the vast majority of Jim Harbaugh's staff will reportedly be fired.
New coach Jim Tomsula plans to part ways with the entire staff of assistant coaches, except running backs coach Tom Rathman, Fox Sports reported on Wednesday.
When one assistant coach was reached Wednesday evening, he had yet to hear from the team about his job status. The team was believed to be in the process of making phone calls to update the assistants into the evening.
Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio was not expected back after getting bypassed for the job in favor of Tomsula, the team’s defensive line coach for the past eight seasons.
A source said general manager Trent Baalke previously told all of the assistant coaches that they were free to explore all options after the 49ers announced a “mutual parting” with coach Jim Harbaugh.
Offensive line coach Mike Solari told CSNBayArea.com that Baalke called him after Tomsula was named coach. Solari said he is scheduled to meet with Baalke on Thursday morning to learn if there is a place for him on the staff.
The 49ers granted permission to the Buffalo Bills this week to interview Mike Solari. Former 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman, now the offensive coordinator on Rex Ryan’s staff with the Bills, is looking to hire Solari to his staff.
The 49ers previously granted permission to Washington to interview Ed Donatell and Eric Mangini for its defensive coordinator job.
All of the 49ers’ assistant coaches remain under contract through the 2015 season.
