The Rams may have been dealt a serious blow to their defensive unit before Week 1 of the regular season.
The team has reportedly lost cornerback E.J. Gaines for the year, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
The second-year cornerback underwent surgery to repair a Lisfranc foot injury sustained during the first weekend in camp.
He had been competing with Trumaine Johnson for a starting job.
Gaines was drafted in the sixth round of the 2014 NFL Draft out of Missouri.
The 23-year-old recorded 70 tackles, two interceptions, and batted 14 passes to the ground as a rookie.
