Former NFL linebacker Hardy Nickerson, announced among the first wave of assistant coaches to Chip Kelly’s staff, is reportedly already leaving the 49ers.
Nickerson will join Lovie Smith’s new staff at Illinois as defensive coordinator/linebackers coach, coachingsearch.com reported on Wednesday. Illinois hired Smith this week as head coach. He spent the past two years as Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ head coach, following nine seasons with the Chicago Bears.
Nickerson spent the past two seasons on Smith’s staff with the Buccaneers after beginning his coaching career in 2007 with the Chicago Bears under Smith. Nickerson, who played collegiately at Cal, spent 16 seasons in the NFL as a player.
The 49ers have hired linebackers coach Tem Lukabu to their staff, reports SI.com. Lukabu recently joined the staff at Western Michigan, which is coached by former 49ers receiver P.J. Fleck.
