Dr. Daniel Garza, the 49ers’ medical director whose death this week sent shockwaves through the organization, was reportedly the focus of a criminal investigation.
A San Mateo County Sheriff’s spokesperson told CSNBayArea.com that no foul play was suspected in Garza’s death. And KRON reports that the coroner’s office is investigating Garza’s death as a possible suicide at his Redwood City home.
Garza was being investigated by the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Department for alleged inappropriate behavior involving adult interns, sources told KRON.

In addition to being on the 49ers’ medical staff since 2007, Garza was also one of the nation’s leading researchers into concussions. Officials at Stanford told KRON they were made aware of Garza’s possible criminal activity and alerted law enforcement.
Before traveling to Nashville, Tenn., on Friday for a game Sunday against the Tennessee Titans, 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh spoke about Garza.
“We were stunned and deeply saddened by his passing: myself, players, coaches, staff,” Harbaugh said. “We send our prayers, our condolences to his family and friends.”

An official at the San Mateo Coroner's Office told CSNBayArea.com an official cause of death would not be released until the case is closed, which typically takes four to six weeks.
