Dave Rahn, a popular and respected member of the 49ers organization for nearly two decades, passed away Thursday morning after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 50.
Rahn maintained ceaseless optimism and good spirits throughout his ordeal, during which he received support from scores of former co-workers, including many 49ers players and staff members.
Over the Fourth of July weekend, ex-49ers linebacker Gary Plummer hosted a celebration of Rahn’s life in San Diego. The “Team Dave” gathering drew many former players and coaches, including Brent Jones, Tim McDonald, Harris Barton, Derrick Deese and Steve Mariucci.
Steve Young, Ronnie Lott and former 49ers owner Eddie DeBartolo also paid recent visits to Rahn. DeBartolo was with Rahn on Wednesday night in San Diego.
Rahn, a 1982 graduate of San Jose’s Leland High School, joined the 49ers as a public relations assistant from 1986 to 1992. He was promoted to coordinator of media relations in 1992. Two years later, Rahn took over as director of travel and team services, where he remained until 2002.
Rahn entered the music industry after leaving the 49ers. He served as tour manager for Boston, Barbra Streisand, Fleetwood Mac, Lionel Richie and Sheryl Crow.
He is survived by his wife Holly.
