SANTA CLARA –- Outside linebacker Corey Lemonier has replaced Aldon Smith on the field during the first week of practices after the 49ers released Smith.
Lemonier's current spot was reflected on the 49ers' first depth chart of training camp, which was released on Wednesday. The 49ers open the exhibition season Saturday night against the Houston Texans. Aaron Lynch has yet to see practice in 11-on-11 settings as he returns from an injury sustained during the team's offseason program.
The 49ers released Smith last week after his fifth run-in with the law since the offseason after his rookie year. Santa Clara Police arrested Smith last Thursday for DUI, hit and run, and vandalism after an incident inside a parking structure at Smith's apartment.
Coach Jim Tomsula said this week that he places very little importance on the depth chart at this early stage.
“That’s what you use the exhibitions for and see who takes it to that next level and see that starts sorting things out,” Tomsula said. “We don’t have depth charts, but you have to put something out onto a piece of paper for these preseason games.
“We will shift that around and those depth charts in no way, I should say now, mean anything in terms of something being solid and staying. You will see those be manipulated throughout the course of the preseason.”
