SANTA CLARA -- In his first season as the full-time starter, quarterback Colin Kaepernick will be a 49ers captain.

Coach Jim Harbaugh announced Kaepernick was chosen by his teammates to an official leadership role, along with defensive mainstays Patrick Willis and Justin Smith.

"There were a lot ofgood candidates, and that was reflected in the vote," Harbaugh said. "Frank Gore was an alternate and (NaVorro Bowman) was the second vote-getter on defense."

Kaepernick's inclusion as a captain shows the kind of credibility the third-year player has garnered in just 10 NFL starts.

"His leadership skills and his work ethic are plus-plus," Harbaugh said.

Like a year ago, the 49ers' special teams captain will be on a rotating weekly basis, Harbaugh said.
