HOUSTON – Quarterback Colin Kaepernick had a brief outing in the 49ers’ exhibition opener Saturday night against the Houston Texans.
Kaepernick completed one of three passing attempts on the 49ers' first drive of the game, including a 14-yard completion to wide receiver Anquan Boldin. It didn’t take Kaepernick long to take his newest deep threat for a test drive. Kaepernick overthrew speedster Torrey Smith, who had gotten behind the Texans defense.
Kaepernick threw away his third-down attempt as he neared the sideline to avoid a sack.
After Kaepernick’s one series, backup quarterback Blaine Gabbert took over and promptly led the 49ers on a 99-yard touchdown drive. Running back Jarryd Hayne, the former star of Australia’s National Rugby League, had a 53-yard run over the left side. Gabbert threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to tight end Garrett Celek. Aftter Phil Dawson's extra point, the 49ers trailed 8-7 early in the second quarter.
