Ex-New York Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell is deciding among multiple job offers, including a spot on the 49ers’ staff, and is “close” to making a decision, a source told CSNBayArea.com Tuesday morning.
Fewell, 52, interviewed late last week for the open position of defensive backs coach on Jim Tomsula’s first staff with the 49ers. Fewell reportedly interviewed with Washington on Monday.
Washington might have the edge, according to a report in the NJ.com because Fewell and his family have lived in New Jersey and have considered keeping it as their permanent residence. Fewell may wish to remain on the East Coast.
Fewell was the Giants defensive coordinator since 2010, during which time the team won a Super Bowl. But he was fired after this past season when the Giants finished 29th in total defense.
He last coached defensive backs in 2005 with the Chicago Bears. He has worked as a defensive coordinator every season since 2006, working four seasons with the Buffalo Bills and six with the Giants.
The 49ers last week hired Eric Mangini to take over as defensive coordinator, replacing Vic Fangio, who served in that role for four seasons under Jim Harbaugh. Fangio was hired as John Fox's defensive coordinator with the Chicago Bears. Ed Donatell, who coached the 49ers' defensive backs during that time, joined Fangio with the Bears.
