The Arizona Cardinals made a little bit of NFL history Monday evening.
Head coach Bruce Arians has hired Dr. Jen Welter as a training camp/preseason intern who will work with the Cardinals' inside linebackers.
Welter is believed to be the first female to be hired as a coach in the NFL.
“Coaching is nothing more than teaching. One thing I have learned from players is, ‘How are you going to make me better? If you can make me better, I don’t care if you’re the Green Hornet, man, I’ll listen.’ I really believe she’ll have a great opportunity with this internship through training camp to open some doors for her,” Arians told the media Monday, via the Cardinals' official site.
Welter was recommended to Arians by Devin Wyman, the head coach of the Texas Revolution, an Indoor Football League team.
The 37-year-old Welter served as the Revolution's Linebackers Coach, according to the team's website.
Following the announcement of her hiring, Welter posted a tweet thanking Arians and the Cardinals for the opportunity.
I am honored to be a part of this amazing team. Special thanks to @BruceArians & the @AZCardinals https://t.co/FcDG1b7P4E
