Newly signed 49ers safety Antoine Bethea’s four-year, $21 million contract will count $3 million against the team’s salary cap this season, a source told CSNBayArea.com.
Bethea, who spent his first eight NFL seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, received a $5 million signing bonus and his entire $1.25 million base salary for 2014 is guaranteed.
He is also in line to collect $400,000 every season in per-game roster bonuses of $25,000 for every game in which he is on the active 46-man roster. Bethea can also make $100,000 every season in workout bonuses. He said on Wednesday that he plans to take part in the 49ers' offseason program, which opens April 21 at the team's practice facility in Santa Clara.
If Bethea is on the 49ers’ roster on April 1, 2015, his entire second-year salary of $3 million also becomes fully guaranteed, the source said.
He is scheduled for non-guaranteed salaries of $4.5 million in 2016 and $5.25 million in 2017. Bethea can also make up to $250,000 in escalators in each of the final three years of the deal if he reaches certain levels of play time, interceptions, along with playoffs or Pro Bowl appearances.
