INDIANAPOLIS – General manager Trent Baalke on Wednesday ended any speculation that tight end Vernon Davis’ spot on the 49ers was in doubt.
When asked if he envisions Davis on the team for the 2015 season, Baalke answered, “Absolutely.”
Davis is scheduled to earn $4.95 million in the final year of his contract. Davis is coming off a season in which he caught just 26 passes for 245 yards. He caught two touchdown passes in the first quarter of the season opener against the Dallas Cowboys and did not get into the end zone the remainder of the season.
“It was an off year,” Baalke said at the NFL Scouting Combine. “He realizes (that). The great thing about Vernon, he understands. He’s been in this business long enough and he’s worked hard enough, he understands where his level of play is and he still believes that he can have some great years ahead of him – as do we. And we look forward to having him a part of those.”
Davis forfeited a $200,000 workout bonus last offseason and skipped the team's mandatory minicamp. He is expected to take part fully in the team's offseason program, which begins April 6 under new coach Jim Tomsula.
Baalke also intimated the 49ers will bring back inside linebackers Patrick Willis and NaVorro Bowman on their current contracts. Willis is scheduled to make $8.315 million, while Bowman is slated to earn $5.45 million.
“I think if you look into those numbers, they’re not as daunting as you might think,” Baalke said.
Willis rehabs nearly every day at the 49ers’ practice facility after undergoing season-ending toe surgery. Bowman is more than a year removed from the knee injury he sustained against the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC Championship game in January of 2014.
“These guys are working hard, and I expect them to be fully healthy,” Baalke said. “They both have made great progress.”
Matt Maiocco will appear on Yahoo SportsTalk Live tonight at 5, 7 & 11 p.m. to discuss Trent Baalke's comments to the media at the NFL combine.
