SANTA CLARA –- The 49ers held formal interviews with nine candidates for the head-coaching job over a 17-day period after the team announced a "mutual parting" with coach Jim Harbaugh.
General manager Trent Baalke had a follow-up interview Tuesday with Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase -- described as a last-ditch push to hire him. There were even reports on Colorado radio and the Bay Area television that an agreement was imminent to make Gase the 49ers' next head coach.
But Baalke said Thursday, on the day the 49ers introduced Jim Tomsula as the organization’s 19th head coach, that there was no late change in the team’s plans.
“That was part of the interview process,” Baalke said of his late meeting with Gase.
Baalke declined to get into specifics about his conversation with Gase.
Baalke added: “The job was offered to one person and one person only, and that was Jim Tomsula.”
