One thought crossed David Molk’s mind when official word came down that Jason Kelce would need surgery.
“Let’s go,” said the backup center, now pressed into an indefinite starting role. “That’s what I’ve been waiting for. This is why I’m here. This is why I played in college. This is why I’ve worked my entire life. This is the opportunity.”
Kelce’s sports hernia surgery will sideline the fourth-year center for several weeks, maybe longer.
The fate of Chip Kelly’s no-huddle attack now hinges on Molk, a formerly unemployed lineman who will make his NFL starting debut Sunday on the road against the 49ers at Levi’s Stadium.
No pressure, right?
“Sure. How could there not be pressure?” Molk said. “But pressure is fun. Put yourself in a corner, fight your way out.”
