The 49ers on Monday worked out speedy wide receiver/return man Trindon Holliday and running back David Fluellen, according to the NFL’s personnel notice.
The 49ers did not sign either player on Monday or Tuesday.
Holliday, 28, has played in just 32 games in five NFL seasons for three different teams. Holiday (5 foot 5, 166 pounds) has four career touchdowns on returns. He signed with the New York Giants in the offseason, but was released before appearing in a game.
He played one game with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers earlier this season, returning two punts for 17 yards with one fumble, before getting released.
Rookie Bruce Ellington is expected to miss his third consecutive game for the 49ers on Thursday night with an ankle sprain. Ellington averaged 7.0 yards on 17 punt returns and 25.8 yards on 14 kick returns.
Perrish Cox has averaged 2.9 yards on eight punt returns after taking over for Ellington. Carlos Hyde is averaging 25.8 yards on eight kickoff returns.
Fluellen, 22, a rookie from Toledo, spent time in training camp with Philadelphia and Indianapolis.
