SANTA CLARA -- Wide receiver Chris Harper, who the 49ers signed in September off the Seattle Seahawks' practice squad, was waived on Thursday. The 49ers announced no corresponding roster move.

The 49ers are expected to promote a defensive lineman to the team's 53-man roster prior to suit up as depth Sunday against the Tennessee Titans. Rookies Mike Purcell and Quinton Dial are the most likely candidates to receive a promotion. Purcell is currently on the 49ers' practice squad, while Dial is on the reserve/non-football injury list.

The 49ers signed Harper, a rookie from Kansas State, to attempt to develop him into a player that could be used at a lot of different positions -- such as wide receiver, tight end and fullback. The 49ers initially compared him to Delanie Walker, whom the team will face this week as a member of the Titans. Harper was inactive for the 49ers' first six games. He spent training camp with the Seahawks after getting cut as a fourth-round draft pick.

In signing him off the Seahawks' practice squad, the 49ers guaranteed $202,000 of his rookie salary. Harper could return to the 49ers' practice squad if he clears waivers.
