The 49ers waived third-string quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson on Tuesday to make room for the addition of wide receiver Michael Crabtree, who was added to the roster from the reserve/physically-unable-to-perform list.
The 49ers now have two quarterbacks on their 53-man roster: Colin Kaepernick and backup Colt McCoy. The 49ers will likely try to bring Bethel-Thompson back to the practice squad. However, Bethel-Thompson could draw interest from teams who are in need of a quarterback.
The 49ers claimed Bethel-Thompson off waivers from the Minnesota Vikings on Oct. 9. The 49ers released veteran John Skelton to make room for Bethel-Thompson, who was in training camp with the 49ers in 2011. A week earlier, the 49ers waived rookie quarterback B.J. Daniels to make room for Skelton. Daniels is currently on the practice squad of the Seattle Seahawks.
Coach Jim Harbaugh said after the 49ers' 27-6 victory over Washington on Monday that he "anticipates" Crabtree playing Sunday against the St. Louis Rams. Crabtree sustained a torn right Achilles during a routine drill in the 49ers' offseason program on May 21. He underwent surgery the following day.
