SANTA CLARA – The 49ers on Tuesday signed five of the nine players who finished the season on their practice squad to reserve/future contracts. Two of the players who were not re-signed were defensive lineman Lawrence Okoye and linebacker Shayne Skov.
The team announced the signings of running back Kendall Gaskins, tight end Xavier Grimble, wide receiver Lance Lewis, offensive tackle Chris Martin and nose tackle Garrison Smith.
Okoye did not re-sign with the 49ers, presumably because he is waiting to see where defensive line coach Jim Tomsula ends up. Okoye, a finalist for Great Britain in discus at the 2012 London Olympics, signed with the 49ers in 2013 in large part because of Tomsula’s commitment to try to develop him into an NFL player.
Skov, who went undrafted this year after a stellar career at Stanford, finished the season on the 49ers’ practice squad. It is uncertain if Skov has a future with the 49ers. The club signed veteran free-agent linebacker Desmond Bishop late in the season instead of promoting Skov to the 53-man roster.
The new league year begin March 10. Teams are allowed to sign practice-squad players and other players who were not on NFL rosters at the end of the 2014 season to reserve/future contracts before the official start of free agency.
