SANTA CLARA -- Free safety Eric Reid was diagnosed with a concussion in the first half of the 49ers' game Saturday night against the San Diego Chargers and was ruled out from returning.
Reid sustained two concussions as a rookie but returned to action the following weeks and did not miss any starts. The 49ers have one game remaining in the season, and he would have to pass through the NFL's protocol on concussions in order to be cleared to return to action.
Reid sustained his second concussion last season when he attempted a high hit on Carolina's 245-pound running back Mike Tolbert. Afterward, Reid said he would have to adjust his tackling style.
"This is the NFL,” Reid said last season. “Guys are a little bit stronger and little bit bigger than what I’m used to playing, so I might have to adjust the way I play a little bit.”
Reid said he will try to evaluate each situation as he comes up to make a tackle.
“Knowing the type of guy you’re going against,” he said. “How big he is? Or if it’s an angle tackle or going head up when you should cut him or hit him for roll tackle him.”
