Ten years after finishing as the runner-up for the 49ers’ head-coaching position, Tim Lewis will reportedly be coming to the organization as an assistant coach.
Lewis and Clancy Pendergast, former NFL defensive coordinators, have joined Jim Tomsula’s coaching staff with the 49ers, according to reports from Fox Sports.
Lewis, who worked the past five seasons as Atlanta Falcons defensive backs coach, will replace Ed Donatell in that same position with the 49ers. Lewis was formerly defensive coordinator of the Pittsburgh Steelers from 2000 to ’03. He spent the next three seasons as New York Giants coordinator.
After the 49ers fired Dennis Erickson as head coach following the 2004 season, Lewis was a finalist for the 49ers’ head coaching job. The 49ers ended up hiring Mike Nolan.
The 49ers last week offered the defensive backs coach position to Perry Fewell, who decided to join Jay Gruden's staff with Washington instead.
Pendergast will reportedly coach the 49ers’ inside linebackers with Jason Tarver in charge of the outside linebackers. Pendergast spent the past few seasons as a defensive coordinator in the college ranks. He spent 2010 to ’12 at Cal before moving to USC in 2013.
He was defensive coordinator of the Arizona Cardinals from 2004 to ’08. He was the Kansas City Chiefs’ defensive coordinator in 2009.
The 49ers also added Scott Brown to the staff as defensive line coach, according to the report. Brown spent the past three seasons as a regional scout, covering the Midwest. Prior to coming to the 49ers in a scouting role, he served the previous 16 seasons as a college defensive line coach at Arizona State, Colorado State and Duke.
The 49ers have not acknowledged any of the additions to their coaching staff beyond the appointment of Tomsula as head coach to replace Jim Harbaugh, other than CEO Jed York's public comments on Friday that, in essence, confirmed the hirings of Geep Chryst, Eric Mangini, Steve Logan, Chris Foerster and Tony Sparano.
