SANTA CLARA -- The 49ers on Tuesday re-signed veteran quarterback Josh Johnson and waived undrafted rookie tight end Asante Cleveland.
Cleveland was promoted to the 49ers' 53-man roster from the practice squad due to injuries that kept Vernon Davis and Vance McDonald out of action. Davis is expected to be available for Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Cleveland will likely return to the 49ers' practice squad if he clears waivers. Johnson returns to being the 49ers' No. 3 quarterback behind Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert.
Derek Carrier started at tight end on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals and played 34 snaps in place of Davis and McDonald. Cleveland did not see any action on offense, but was on the field for six plays on special teams.
