The 49ers on Tuesday re-signed quarterback Josh Johnson and released special-teams player Bubba Ventrone.
Ventrone was signed last week to a spot on the 49ers’ 53-man roster. Ventrone played 23 snaps on special teams in the 49ers’ 31-17 victory over the St. Louis Rams on Monday.
The 49ers re-signed Johnson so that he can take part in practices this week, leading up to the game Sunday against the Denver Broncos.
After the 49ers released Johnson on Friday, coach Jim Harbaugh said Johnson and Blaine Gabbert are “neck and neck” for the backup job behind Colin Kaepernick. Gabbert has not played a snap this season as the 49ers' No. 2 quarterback.
The 49ers are likely to have Ventrone and Johnson swap roster spots again before their next game, so Ventrone will be available to play against the Broncos.
