ST. LOUIS – Linebacker Patrick Willis did not return to the lineup at the beginning of the second half Monday night against the St. Louis Rams due to a toe injury.
Willis was ruled out after initially being listed as questionable to return.
The severity is not known, but Tramaine Brock still isn’t back after sustaining toe injury in Week 1. Willis returned to the team's sideline in street clothes with an orthopedic boot on his left foot.
With Willis sidelined, the 49ers opened the second half with rookie Chris Borland and Michael Wilhoite as the inside linebacker. Borland, an All-America at Wisconsin, was a third-round draft pick.
Willis' status was not immediately known. The 49ers figure to be without All-Pro inside linebacker NaVorro Bowman for several more weeks. Bowman continues to rehab from a knee injury sustained in the NFC Championship game.
