SANTA CLARA -- Defensive lineman Justin Smith, who sat out Wednesday with a shoulder injury, returned to limited practice on Thursday and is expected to play Sunday in the 49ers' game at Candlestick Park against the Indianapolis Colts.

Meanwhile, tight end Vernon Davis (hamstring) and defensive lineman Ray McDonald (ankle) did not practice for the second consecutive day since sustaining fourth-quarter injuries Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks. They remain questionable for Sunday's game.

LaMichael James went through limited practice for the first time since sustaining a left knee sprain in the 49ers’ final exhibition game. It’s not known whether James, the team’s third-string running back, will have a role in Sunday’s game.

Quarterback Colin Kaepernick (foot) was on the injury report for the second straight day. He shows no sign of an injury.
