SANTA CLARA -- Tight end Vernon Davis and safety Eric Reid returned to limited practice on Wednesday three days after sustaining concussions.
Meanwhile, New Orleans Saints own tight end and safety, Ben Watson and Kenny Vaccaro, were held out of practice after they sustained concussions Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys. Vaccaro has already revealed he will not play Sunday against the 49ers.
Wide receiver Mario Manningham, who made his season debut for the 49ers last week after returning from two torn knee ligaments, went through limited practice on Wednesday. It is not known whether the knee that is giving him problems is his surgically repaired left knee.
The 49ers have one open roster spot, which they might be holding for tight end Derek Carrier, who is on the practice squad. Third tight end Garrett Celek did not practice due to a hamstring injury.
When asked if wide receiver Michael Crabtree could be added to the 53-man roster for Sunday’s game, 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said, “We’ll see. I’m not going to make any predictions today on who that is, but we’ve been encouraged with his progress and there’s other options as well.”
Crabtree, who is on the reserve/physically unable to perform list, was not spotted on the practice field Wednesday. Because he is not on the 53-man roster, his activity is not included on the 49ers’ injury report. Crabtree was cleared to begin practicing last week, six months after undergoing surgery to repair a torn Achilles.
