OWINGS MILLS, Md. –- Short-handed at wide receiver, the 49ers on Saturday added a camp player to fill a spot on the 90-man roster.
The 49ers also find themselves thin along the defensive line. Fullback Will Tukuafu has the ability to play on the line, as he showed in the exhibition opener Thursday night against the Baltimore Ravens.
“(We’re) thin still and will be through the weekend and until we get back next week,” 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said of the defensive line. “We’ve got some reinforcements coming next week, from our own team.”
Veterans Justin Smith and Ray McDonald are expected to return to work when the 49ers return to the Bay Area. Smith (shoulder) and McDonald (biceps) underwent offseason surgeries.
Defensive linemen Demarcus Dobbs and Lawrence Okoye sustained ankle injuries on Thursday. X-rays on Okoye were negative.
He was seen on crutches and is not expected to practice. Dobbs' condition is not known.
Nose tackle Glenn Dorsey remains on the 90-man roster with a torn biceps. It’s been undetermined whether Dorsey is out for the season.
The 49ers added free-agent wide receiver Lance Lewis on Saturday to take the roster spot that was vacated when the 49ers placed Chuck Jacobs on waived/injured with a torn ACL, Harbaugh said.
If Jacobs clears waivers, he will automatically revert to the 49ers' injured reserve list for the season.
