Defensive lineman Justin Smith is expected to be at the 49ers’ workout facility on Wednesday or Thursday, general manager Trent Baalke said Tuesday.
Baalke, appearing on SiriusXM NFL Radio, said he will speak with Smith and might have an indication whether he plans to return for a 15th NFL season. Baalke and coach Jim Tomula have said they are in no rush to get an answer from Smith, who is contemplating retirement.
"He and I are going to set down and just talk," Baalke said. "We'll probably have a better answer at that stage, but I have not talked to him outside of a brief conversation I had with him yesterday to find out when we could get together. So I think we'll all know more on Wednesday or Thursday of this week."
In mid-January, Baalke said he expected to speak with Smith in “two or three weeks.” And Tomsula said in February that he expected to speak with Smith after the NFL scouting combine.
The 49ers have not even ruled out a mid-season return for Smith, if he is not willing to commit at this time to playing the 2015 season, sources told CSNBayArea.com.
